The hefty regional kitchen was never designed to please calorie counters. A traditional local diet includes much meat, thick sauces, potatoes and vegetables. However, late spring sees the arrival of locally grown healthy and light white Asparagus, Spargel, on the markets.

When in season, Rhenish mussels, Muscheln rheinischer Art, prove highly popular. They are cooked in white wine and served with typical German black bread, Schwarzbrot.

BEVERAGES IN NEUSS

Tap water in Germany is perfectly safe to drink. Bottled water is popular, whereby sparkling water, Mineralwasser, is carbonated, still water, Stilles Wasser, is not. A local champion brew famous to the region has long been a rich, dark beer known as old beer, Altbier.

Another popular drink in Neuss and elsewhere in Germany is a blend of apple juice and sparkling water, Apfelschorle. Fruit and vegetable juices are also highly popular.

KIOSKS IN NEUSS

Kiosks are a longstanding tradition in Germany and are invaluable to local residents at certain times. Tucked into side streets or off main roads, they are able to fulfil spontaneous needs.

Larger shops and stores nowadays open longer and fuel stations provide many goods out of normal shopping hours. Even so, these convenience stores in Neuss normally offer drinks, alcohol, snacks and a small selection of edible items to their faithful clients.
